Harvey J. Graff, The Ohio State University

Harvey J. Graff is Professor Emeritus of English and History and Ohio Eminent Scholar in Literacy Studies at Ohio State University where he founded and directed the university-wide interdisciplinary initiative LiteracyStudies@OSU from 2004-2016. Author of many books on the history of literacy, children and youth, cities, theory and method in humanities and social sciences, and interdisciplinarity, SEARCHING FOR LITERACY: THE SOCIAL AND INTELLECTUAL ORIGINS OF LITERACY STUDIES (Palgrave Macmillan) and THE CONTINUING EDUCATION OF A HISTORIAN: THE INTERSECTIONS OF THE PERSONAL, THE POLITICAL, THE ACADEMIC AND PLACE are forthcoming. He is known best for THE LITERACY MYTH; THE LEGACIES OF LITERACY; CONFLICTING PATHS: GROWING UP IN AMERICA; THE DALLAS MYTH; and UNDISCIPLINING KNOWLEDGE: INTERDISCIPLINARITY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. In retirement, he focuses on "public education" by writing, speaking, and advising a diverse set of audiences on contemporary issues in critical historical perspectives. He writes frequently for TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION, INSIDE HIGHER EDUCATION, ACADEME BLOG; WASHINGTON MONTHLY; PUBLISHERS WEEKLY; and has a regular column, "Busting Myths" in the COLUMBUS FREE PRESS.
